3-D Short Films (Theatrical): 1893 - Present
IMPORTANT NOTE: The following films are less than 50 minutes in duration, and have all been made available to the public in a variety of commercial venues. Many have enjoyed general exhibition alongside their feature-length counterparts, while others have been subject to limited distribution in theme parks and Large Format theaters. Some were even released directly to home video (this category is restricted to movies featuring a scripted dramatic narrative). As with the main list, I've excluded museum exhibits, commercials, single episodes of long-running TV shows, industrial videos, computer games and experimental films (including those screened in specially-designed projection venues at numerous Expo's and trade fairs), unless there seemed a compelling reason for including them. I've also excluded amateur films, except for those with a scripted (dramatic) narrative which have received some kind of commercial distribution, either theatrically or on home video. Each entry includes title(s), country of origin, copyright year and the name of the 3-D process employed. As with the main filmography, each entry indicates which gauge was employed during principal photography to capture the separate left-right images, and this appears directly after the 'colour (col)', 'black and white (bw)' and/or 'scope' notation. Abbreviations as follows: 16mm = Separate left-right images captured on 16mm film. 1070 = Separate left-right images captured on 10-perf 65mm film (70mm release prints). 1570 = Separate left-right images captured on 15-perf 65mm film (70mm release prints). 35mm = Separate left-right images captured on 35mm film. 3070 = Separate left-right images captured on 30-perf 65mm film (70mm release prints) 65mm = Separate left-right images captured on 5-perf 65mm film (70mm release prints) 70mm = Separate left-right images captured on 5-perf 70mm film. 870 = Separate left-right images captured on 8-perf 65mm film (70mm release prints). CGI = Applies to computer-animated films whereby the separate left-right images are generated within the digital domain. digital still photography = Puppet animation photographed by a motion-controlled digital camera which captures every frame twice, at slightly different angles to one another. This results in separate left-right elements which are later configured into a three-dimensional release print. HD = Separate left-right images captured on HD video. Super-8 = Separate left-right images captured on Super-8 film. video = Separate left-right images captured on standard-definition video. Quasi-dimensional 3-D formats (anaglyph, Pulfrich, etc.) are noted within the body of each entry. Readers are advised that films shot in a specific format - such as dual-35mm - may have been released in a different 3-D format altogether. For example, nearly all 21st century 3-D films are released in a variety of digital formats (Real-D, Dolby 3-D, etc.), though they may have been shot using twin HD cameras, or created via computer animation. Most 3-D films before 1950 were shot in dual-35mm but released theatrically in single-strip anaglyph format, and in many cases, the original dual-35mm elements may no longer exist. NB. Where two production dates are given - ie. '1991 (2010)' - this indicates that the film was originally released in 2-D format before being reissued in 'dimensionalized' 3-D. The earlier date reflects the original 2-D version, while the latter date indicates the 3-D re-release. Be advised: The following list itemizes every known short film exhibited in a commercial venue, but does NOT cover the wide spectrum of 3-D short films in existence. Hundreds of 3-D shorts have been produced for special venue exhibition all over the world, many of them confined to a tiny number of commercial outlets (in some cases, a single theme park!). Dozens of documentaries have been produced for home video, many of them in quasi-dimensional Pulfrich '3-D', and the Japanese have produced a number of non-narrative Adult films for home video which were shot and released in field sequential format. These ultra-obscure items fall outside the scope of this filmography, which exists to catalogue every feature-length 3-D film and to provide an overview of those short films which have enjoyed widespread exhibition and popularity since the invention of moving images. It needs someone with greater resources than mine to provide a truly definitive history of stereoscopic cinema. * = Entry incomplete. 870 = 8-perf 65mm film (70mm release print). 1070 = 10-perf 65mm film (70mm release print). 1570 = 15-perf 65mm film (70mm release print). 3070 = 30-perf 65mm film (70mm release print). bw = Black and white. col = Colour. fps = Frames per second. FS = Field sequential. (LF) = Large Format (Movies shot and/or released on 8-perf film or larger, including Showscan). scope = Films with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 (pre-1971) or 2.39:1 (1971 onwards). Other ratios between 2.00:1 and 2.76:1 are noted within individual entries. (SV) = Special Venue (theme park films, etc.). (V) = Films produced for - and released directly to - home video. NEW ENTRIES (November 2012): All of the 1950's 3-D shorts listed amongst these New Entries were sourced from Bob Furmanek's invaluable website The 3-D Film Archive (www.3dfilmarchive.com), which hauled them out of obscurity almost sixty years after they were first exhibited to the paying public! These burlesque time capsules were were subject to limited distribution in their day (most of them in anaglyph format only, though all were shot dual-35mm), but they form an otherwise vital part of 3-D movie history. My thanks to Bob and his impeccable research skills. Just when you think you've got the entire 1950's 3-D boom covered... He writes: [Edward] Connor noted that a May 1923 screening on a single strip of film that required no glasses for 3-D viewing was made by the American Releasing Corporation in a rented projection room in New York City. Walter Parkes of Oakland, California, shot the scenes of the Grand Canyon that were projected. Less reliable sources claim the film was shot in anaglyph format, indicating the use of an anaglyphic camera attachment, which seems unlikely. However, some sources claim the film was projected theatrically in anaglyph, possibly alongside a polarized version. However, its also possible the film was shot in dual-35mm and composed for 2.35:1 within the Academy 1.37:1 frame(s), optically extracted during post-production (the same process was used in 1960 for September Storm, see entry in main listing). It was first screened at the Astor Theater, New York, in June 1915, comprising material often listed as separate entries in their own right - Rural America and Niagara Falls. However, these represent only the subject matter of individual reels within this demonstration, and were never conceived as independent items. The demo also includes stereoscopic footage taken on the set of a 2-D feature film, Jim the Penman (1915), which has caused some confusion over the years, leading most 3-D researchers to believe - erroneously - that part (or all) of JTP was also filmed in 3-D.
